Wikileaks whistleblowing site closes
Wikileaks – the web site that enables whistleblowers to leak and publish material anonymously – has closed down. This has been caused by a lack of money. It is funded by donations, but refuses to accept money from governments or businesses so as to remain totally independent. It has published information that more mainstream news reporting services are frightened to for legal reasons, such as the list of British National Party members. The site has received acclaim from human rights campaigners such as Amnesty International as well as from investigative journalists. The site, though, has been controversial, and has received numerous legal complaints. Whether the closure is temporary or longer-lasting remains to be seen.
