The recent proposals to update the data protection laws across the European Union (EU) have brought much comment and debate in the UK (see here and here). The EU Justice Commissioner has now announced that a “Data Protection Board” will be created to oversee the revised regime, monitor compliance and enforce its restrictions.
The “Article 29 Working Party”, which is a committee of national regulators from each EU State (including the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office), will provide the basis for the new board. The board will offer support to each country’s regulator and, it is hoped, will bring about more harmonisation between the data protection laws in each Member State.
