Global spend on medicines to increase faster, but more growth in emerging markets

Global spend on medicines is set to grow by 5-7% per year between now and 2016, compared with the 3-4% growth rate this year. The amount will reach US$1.2 trillion in 2016. This increase masks a massive divergence between spending in the developed and emerging economies. Whilst growth in the developed economies will be just 0-3% per year between now and 2016, the emerging economies will double. The developed world will be spending 57% of the total on medicines in 2016, compared with 73% in 2006.
