The Video Standards Council (VSC) has taken over responsibility for the regulation of content of video games. The responsibility is allocated to the VSC by the Video Recordings (Labelling) Regulations 2012. The VSC will not have responsibility for games content where the game is ancillary to a film on a disc or contains explicit sexual content; in those instances, the responsibility will fall to the British Board of Film Classification.
The VSC will have the power to prevent the sale of video games in the UK. In addition, if retailers supply age-restricted games to children below that specified age, the retailer could be subject to a fine of up to £5,000 or imprisonment of up to 6 months.
