Non-engaging websites set deadline on cookies by ICO

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has said in a blog that some websites that have failed to “engage” with the ICO in relation to their use of cookies have been set a deadline for compliance with the new cookies law that applies in the UK.

Changes in the law in relation to cookies mean that cookies that collect personal data about users are only lawful if the user first consents to the cookies being placed on their computer. The ICO can fine website operators that fail to comply with the law up to £500,000.

The ICO’s blog states that it has spoken to a number of website operators about how to comply with the new law; however, some websites have failed to engage with the ICO and not taken any steps towards compliance, and it is those websites on whom the ICO will focus enforcement action.
