ICO hands out two fines of over £250,000 for spam texting

The Information Commissioner’s Office – the UK’s privacy regulator – has handed out fines of over 250,000 each to two people who have sent spam texts. The marketers have breached the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. Unless people have opted-out, they may receive unsolicited marketing calls, but sending automated messages or texts without permission is not lawful and may be subject to fines of up to £500,000. The ICO said people are increasingly concerned about unsolicited calls and texts, often made by rogue businesses seeing if they can get someone compensation for an accident.
