Patient self-selection of P Medicines only to proceed if safe

Patients will only be able to select their only P category medicines from pharmacists if it is safe to do so, according to Duncan Rudkin, chief executive and registrar of the General Pharmaceutical Council. Although the GPhC may bring about a change in the regulations, pharmacists would still need to supervise any sales. Therefore, any fears that pharmacists will not be able to exercise their legal and professional duty to protect patients from unsafe medicines is misplaced. There is a concern that the large multiple chains will benefit from self selection but patients and the independent pharmacists may not if self-selection goes ahead.
