SFO revises bribery enforcement policies

The Serious Fraud Office has issued revised policies on its position on key issues under the Bribery Act 2010. These include facilitation payments (where government officials are paid an additional sum for performing an existing duty), corporate hospitality and self-reporting. This follows a change at the top of the SFO, as David Green QC recently replaced Richard Alderman as Director of the SFO. The SFO, which is the primary enforcer of the UK’s bribery laws, emphasised that the position on facilitation payments had not changed and had always been illegal. Mr Green also said that genuine hospitality remains part and parcel of doing business, but he warned that it must not be used as a cover for bribes.
