A man and woman wish to be the first heterosexual couple to enter into a civil partnership. Despite wishing to have the same legal rights as any husband and wife, the couple have indicated that they do not want to collude “with the segregation that exists in matrimonial law” between civil partnerships and marriage. As the Civil Partnership Act 2004 was brought into force in order to afford same sex couples the same rights and responsibilities as heterosexual couples, the only benefit would appear to be in the name. Peter Tatchell, a human rights campaigner supports and applauds the couple’s heterophobic challenge. The question remains, what’s in a name?
